Effect of electrodes in the radiation induced conductivity for polymers

Description

Samples of PET with 23 μm thickness were exposed to continuous X-rays and the radiation-induced conductivity (RIC) as a function of time were measured, using electrodes of evaporated aluminum and gold. The results showed that the use of higher atomic number metal electrodes increase the received dose rate by sample, without almost modifying the time evolution of the RIC or its dependence with the applied electric field intensity. It is also showed that this increase is caused by the electrode placed in the face of the sample where the radiation strikes, as well as by the one placed in the oposite face. (author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Amostras de PET de 23 μm de espessura foram irradiadas continuamente por radiacao X, e a evolucao temporal da condutividade induzia pela radiacao (RIC) foi obtida, com utilizacao de eletrodos de ouro de aluminio. Os resultados mostram que eletrodos de metal de maior numero atomico aumentam a taxa de base recebida pela amostra, sem praticamente alterar a evolucao temporal da RIC ou sua dependencia com a intensidade do campo eletrico aplicado. E demostrado ainda que tal aumento e causado tanto pelo eletro situado na face da amostra em que incide a radiacao, como por aqueles situado na face oposta. (autor)
