An electromagnetic shower detector using proportional wire chambers with cathode plane delay-line readout

Description
The construction and performance of a fine-grained electromagnetic shower detector is described. The detector consisted of 49 1 x1 1 m proportional wire chambers interlaced with one radiation length thick aluminium plates. The delay-line readout on the cathode planes measured the centroid positions of the shower. The anode wire planes measured the shower energy and can be used to form an experimental trigger. The detector was used successfully in an elastic neutrino-electron scattering experiment at Fermilab. (orig.)
