Isotopic separation by shock wave nozzle
Description
A method for the separation of a UF6-isotope mixture is claimed. A supersonic gas jet containing 235UF6, 238UF6, a reaction partner and optionally a carrier gas passes from a slot-shaped nozzle allowing adiabatic expansion of the gas. Laser irradiation selectively excites the 235UF6 causing it to react with the reaction partner to form 235UF5. This condenses, and the condensed 235UF5 is physically separated from the 238UF6 molecules. A compression shock is applied to the gas jet containing the condensed 235UF5 by means of a narrow, rigid face area which projects into the peripheral area of the gas jet and is at a sharp angle to the axis of the gas jet.238UF6 molecules are deflected by the compression shock. The undeflected 235UF5 is conducted in the direction of the undeflected gas jet to a collection vessel. The opening of this vessel is defined on one side by the narrow rigid face area, and on the opposite side by the edge of a stripper wall which in the downstream direction of the gas jet divides the deflected 238UF6 molecules from the condensed 235UF5
