Fracture toughness of chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics
Description
This paper presents some results obtained in studies concerning the fracture toughness (K /SUB IC/ ) of starting glasses and corresponding glass ceramics. The critical stress-intensity factor K /SUB IC/ was measured for glasses of the As-Ge-Se system nucleated with Ag, Cu, Cd, Zr, and Hf. The glass ceramics obtained show an important increase of K /SUB IC/ , especially for Cd, Zr and Hf nucleants. Crystallization brings about an increase in K /SUB IC/ which may be spectacular. Small, highly charged cations seem to have the greatest capacity for producing abundant nucleation which increase K /SUB IC/ as in the case of oxide glasses
