Sorption of thorium from aqueous solutions by alkylammonium salts of ISO- and heteropolyacids of transition metals. I. Effect of pH on the extraction of thorium by alkyltrimethylammonium molybdates

Description

The pH dependence of the extraction of thorium from aqueous solutions by sorption on alkyltrimethylammonium molybdates was investigated. It was found that under optimal thorium concentration conditions molybdenum is precipitated in the form of a tetramolybdate Mo4O132-. Thorium forms complexes with precipitates of molybbdenum isopolyacidic salts. In the complex-formation reactions thorium is in the 4+ oxidation state. With a decrease in the molybdenum concentration, and on passing from sulfuric to hydrochloric acid media, the maximum thorium extraction is shifted towards lower pH values. The formation of thorium complexes with molybdenum oxoanions is confirmed by IR spectroscopic studies
