Description
We first review the success of the Hartree-Fock (HF) theory with Skyrme type effective nucleon-nucleon interaction in describing the ground states properties of finite nuclei and of nuclear matter (NM). Next we review the current status of the HF based random phase approximation (RPA) as applied to the study of properties of giant resonances. We then discuss, in particular, the properties of compression modes and the extracted value of the nuclear matter incompressibility coefficient which is needed to extend our knowledge of the NM equation of state
