1. Alpha transformation of atomic nuclei

Creators

Description

The basic concepts are defined such as are related to the properties and composition of atomic nuclei (mass unit, half-life, isotope, radioactivity). The Bq unit is defined and radioactive decay mathematically described. The energy spectra are given of alpha particles emitted by elements of the natural radioactive series. The theory of alpha transformation is explained using models of atomic nuclei (liquid drop model, shell model, collective model). The interaction of alpha particles with matter and their range in dependence on energy is described. The concepts of specific ionization and stopping power are introduced. Problems related to measurement of alpha source activities are discussed. (E.F.)
