Qualification of class 1e equipment: regulation, technological margins and test experience

Description
French regulation requires licensee to qualify electrical equipment important to safety for service in nuclear power plants to ensure that the equipment can perform its safety function under the set of plausible operating conditions. The French regulatory texts entitled Fundamental safety rules have classified safety related electrical equipment in three main categories: k1, k2, k3, according to their location and operating conditions. The definition of a design basis accident test profile must account for margins applied to thermal hydraulic code outputs. Specific safety margins was added to cover uncertainties in qualification test representativity. Up to now, accidental sequence studies have shown the validity of such a qualification test profile. On the other hand, the results from post accident simulation tests have shown that it is useful not only to validate post accident operating life but also to reveal failures initiated during previous tests

La reglementation Francaise demande la qualification des equipements electriques importants vis a vis de la securite dans les centrales nucleaires afin que ces equipements puissent assurer leur fonction de securite dans un ensemble de conditions de fonctionnement plausibles. Les textes de la reglementation francaise classent en trois categories principales (k1, k2, k3) ces equipements en fonction de leur localisation et de leur condition de fonctionnement. La definition d'un accident de reference doit prendre en compte des marges de securite appliquees aux calculs faits a l'aide de codes de calcul hydrauliques. Des marges de securite specifiques ont ete ajoutees pour couvrir les incertitudes de la representativite des tests de qualification. Jusqu'a maintenant, les etudes de sequences accidentelles ont montre la validite d'un tel profil de tests de qualification. D'autre part, les resultats de tests de simulation post-accidentels ont montre qu'il est utile non seulement de valider les conditions de fonctionnement apres accident mais aussi de reveler les accidents inities pendant des essais precedentsFiles
