The third law of black hole mechanics, which has not previously received a precise formulation, is established in the following form: No continuous process in which the stress-energy tensor of matter stays bounded and satisfies the weak energy condition in a neighbourhood of the apparent horizon can reduce the surface gravity of a black hole to zero within a finite advanced time
