Global value of Hubble constant
Description
The luminosity-H I width relation of 52 spiral galaxies was observed in three wavebands to derive three independent distance estimations for each galaxy. The measurements were performed in an attempt to increase the accuracy of the Hubble constant and thereby estimates of the age of the Universe. The magnitudes were recorded at 1.05 micron and the H I data were taken at 5500 A and 6738 A. The resulting luminosity-H I width ratios (Hubble ratios) were different for distant (76.3-78.9 km/sec/Mpc) and nearby (58.5-83.5 km/sec/Mpc) galaxies. Since the nearby galaxies included Virgo, toward which the Galaxy is falling, the Hubble ratio was measured for a galaxy (Gruz) in the opposite direction. The average distance to Gruz and Virgo was within 4 km/sec/Mpc of 71 km/sec/Mpc, close to the value for distant galaxies. The measured infall velocity was in the range 228-349 km/sec. 12 references
