Nuclear structure research at the ANU: George's legacy and our vision for the future

Full text: It is widely recognized that George made great contributions to nuclear spectroscopy and placed the ANU Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility on the international stage as a leading nuclear structure laboratory. An excellent experimenter, George developed the techniques of time-correlated gamma-ray and electron spectroscopy. With these methods he tackled many avenues of research for which he is widely known, and which remain active areas of contemporary research. These include shape co-existence and nuclear isomerism, especially high-K isomers, as well as the interplay of shell structure and octupole collectivity near and beyond 208Pb. In this talk I will review some of our present research that has grown out of George's achievements, the vision we have for the future that grows from them, and the philosophy that he has imparted to us.
