Method of suppressing corrosions in a fuel channel box

  • 1. Hitachi Engineering Co. Ltd., Ibaraki (Japan)

Description

Purpose: To prevent electrical corrosion of a fuel channel box in BWR type reactor. Method: An insulator (for example, aluminum oxide) or a metal plate with a more basic standard electrode potential than zirconium metal (for example, beryllium or aluminum) is put between the contact positions of a channel box made of zirconium alloy and an upper lattice plate made of stainless steels, or metal with a lower standard electrode potential is plated at the contact portion with the channel box or the lattice plate. This enables to suppress the corrosion reaction and abnormal oxidation of channel box and defoliation of oxide layers while possessing the same extent of mechanical property and neutron irradiation property as usual.
