Neutron absorber rod

Description

Purpose: To extend mechanical and nuclear life time of neutron absorber rods. Constitution: Europium hexafluoride powder is filled as neutron absorbers to the inside of a fine diameter and great length cladding pipe made of stainless steels, and arranged at an equi-distance by means of stainless steel balls, and both of upper and lower ends of the pipe are closed tightly with end plugs to constitute a neutron absorber rod. When europium hexafluoride is used as the neutron absorber, neutrons are absorbed by B-10 and Eu. Among them, while B-10 forms He gas due to (n, α), Eu forms no He gas since most of Eu causes (n, γ) reaction. Accordingly, the amount of the He gas formed is reduced, as compared with the case of using boron carbide, thereby enabling to suppress the volumic expansion of the cladding pipe. (Sekiya, K.)
