Description
Nuclear scission is described by random neck rupture and random neck rupture is traced back to a series of instabilities. The paper contains a concise collection of formulas for the computation of the prescission shape and for the derivation of the mass distribution, the total kinetic energy, and the neutron multiplicity from that prescission shape. Evidence for the two main items of random neck rupture, namely rupture and randomness, is produced. Multichannel fission means that several prescission shapes occur. (orig.)
