The accuracy of standardless PIXE microanalysis in geoscience applications

Description
The accuracy of the proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE) analysis was tested against accepted bulk analysis of glasses prepared from standard rocks. The data presented show that absolute standardless PIXE analysis of minerals can be done to an accuracy of the order of 3% (standard deviation) using a chopper. The data also suggest that the bulk of existing data, which are normalized to electron microprobe Fe, are of similar accuracy. Moreover, the Monte Carlo tests indicated that this reliability can be expected for quite different types of spectra from a wide variety of samples. 4 refs., 1 tab. 2 figs
