The cyclotron maser theory of AKR and Z-mode radiation
Description
The cyclotron maser mechanism which may be responsible for the generation of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) and Z-mode radiation is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the basic concepts of the cyclotron maser theory, particularly the relativistic effect of the cyclotron resonance condition. Recent development of the theory is reviewed. Finally, we report the result of a computer simulation study which helps to understand the nonlinear saturation of the maser instability
