Report
Summary of fuel cycle back-end alternatives for a new nuclear source. Final report
Description
The major sections of the review are as follows: Open back-end (such as deep geological disposal, disposal under sea bed, ejection into space, disposal in glaciers), closed back-end (i.e. reprocessing/transmutation plus deep disposal of the waste from the process followed by incorporation in a suitable matrix, such as borosilicate glass), the zero variant (i.e. long-time storage); waste retrievability; natural uranium availability and price development; natural barrier alternatives; deep geological disposal design and alternatives; structural material alternatives; sealing and backfilling material alternatives; spent fuel and high-level radioactive waste disposal cask alternatives; and radioactive waste forms.
