SEM observations of sensitized austenitic clad metals

Description
Austenitic clad metals containing different amounts of delta ferrite were obtained by shielded metal arc welding and submerged arc welding processes. They were subjected to 650deg C heat treatment for periods ranging from 1 to 50 hours. Diamond finish polished samples were subjected to 65% nitric acid and acid ferric sulphate tests. It has been found that the intergranular corrosion of austenitic clad metals is controlled by the presence of delta ferrite. SEM observations were found very useful in understanding the intergranular corrosion behaviour of weld metals. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Es wurden Auftragsschweissungen aus austenitischem Schweissgut mit unterschiedlichen Deltaferritgehalten mit Hilfe des Schutzgas- und des Tauchlichtbogenverfahrens hergestellt. Sie wurden einer Sensibililsierungsgluehung bei 650deg C mit 1 bis 50 h Dauer unterzogen. Die Probenoberflaechen wurden mit Diamantpaste poliert. Anschliessend wurden Korrosionstests in 65%iger Salpetersaeure und in saurem Ferrisulfat durchgefuehrt. Es konnte festgestellt werden, dass die interkristalline Korrosion von austenitischem Schweissgut vom Deltaferritanteil kontrolliert wird. Fuer die Untersuchung des interkristallinen Korrosionsverhaltens sind REM-Beobachtungen besonders gut geeignet. (orig.)Additional details
