It is the purpose of this article to survey the problems faced in the diagnostic assessment of histopathologic imagery by computer, and to examine how they impact on the choice of a computer configuration. The material is presented in two parts. The first examines the needs and problems in information extraction from histopathology imagery; the second part describes a specific computer architecture suitable for these applications
