Numerical solution for the problem of the solidification controlled by heat conduction around cylindrical tubes with cylindrical fins

Description

The investigation of a possible configuration of tubes with cylindrical fins for thermal energy storage systems, is presented considering solidification controlled by heat conduction. Using enthalpic formulation, the heat balance is performed for control volumes and the numerical solution is obtained through the alternated direction implicit method (ADI) by an iterative procedure due to the non-linearity of the equations. It was concluded that shorter discharge time and higher amount of energy can be achieved by increasing the height of fins, the number of fins, the tempeature differences between phase changing and tube wall, as well as by utilizing a more compact tube array in the storage system. Abstract (Portuguese)

Investiga-se a possivel configuracao de tubos dotados de aletas cilindricas para armazenadores, considerando-se solidificacao controlada por conducao de calor. Utilizando-se a formulacao entalpica, o balanco termico e feito em volumes de controle e a solucao numerica e obtida atraves do metodo implicito de direcoes alternadas (ADI), de forma iterativa, devido a nao linearidade das equacoes. Conclui-se que um menor tempo de descarga e uma maior energia armazenada podem ser conseguidos aumentando-se a altura das aletas, o numero de aletas, a diferenca entre as temperaturas de mudanca de fase e da parede do tubo, assim como utilizando-se um arranjo mais compacto dos tubos do armazenador.
