Present status of fusion researches in USA, (2). Present status of fusion researches at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Description
At present, efforts are concentrated on the research and development of the device based on the tandem mirror principle in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The demonstration of the principle of tandem mirror containment with the TMX and the advent of the new concept of thermal barrier made the prospect of the practical use of nuclear fusion reactors based on the magnetic mirrors bright. At present, the experiment of forming thermal barrier by electron cyclotron resonance heating is in progress at the TMX-Upgrade device. The research has been continued aiming at the realization of a test reactor with zero electric output with the fusion power demonstration facility through the confirmation of the proportionality law and the attainment of the physically critical condition with the mirror fusion test facility B. The history of magnetic mirror experiment, the present status of the tandem mirror experiment, the future plan, and the development of superconducting magnetic coils, fast neutral beam sources, gyrotrons and others are described. 米国ローレンスリバモア国立研究所での核融合研究は現在、タンデムミラーの原理に基づいた装置の研究開発に努力が集中されている。最近のTMX(Tandem Mirror Experiment)装置によるタンデムミラー閉じ込め原理の実証およびサーマルバリアと呼ばれる新しい概念の出現は、磁気ミラーに基づいた核融合炉の実用化の見通しを明るくした。現在、TMX-Upgrade装置において、電子サイクロトロン共鳴加熱によるサーマルバリアの形成実験が進行中であり、その原理が実証された後、1986年完成予定のMFTF-B(Mirror Fusion Test Facility-B)装置により比例則の確認、物理的臨界条件の達成を経て、今世紀末までに、FPD(Fusion Power Demonstration)施設によるゼロ電気出力試験炉の実現を目標として研究が続けられている。本稿では、ローレンスリバモア国立研究所での磁気ミラー装置研究の歴史、現状ならびに将来計画について解説を行う。 (著者)Additional details
