Safeguards technology on nuclear materials by optical fiber scintillator

Description

The purpose of this paper is to develop safeguards instruments for nuclear material verification, monitoring and accounting by using optical fiber scintillator (OFS) as radiation detectors of gamma-ray and neutron. As the results of the investigation on physical properties and radiation resistance of the OFS, and light properties of optical fibers to be used for scintillating light transmission, it was found that OFS is very attractive and effective material to be applicable to the instrument development in the field of nuclear material safeguards, especially in the verification of spent nuclear fuel of which intensive radiation restricts the use of normal radiation detectors in a mass storage facility such as spent fuel pool. Technical aspect on the specifications of the OFS detector design and adaptation, and future plan were also described. (author). 23 refs., 15 tabs., 47 figs
