The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) has been under construction by the U.S. Department of Energy since 1981. That construction is expected to be completed by the end of 1986. Then, after extensive checkout, training, testing, and mock-waste handling demonstration, WIPP will start to receive and store nuclear waste in October, 1988
