Investigation and characterization of spent ion-exchanger at CIAE
Description
Spent ion exchangers are considered to be problematic waste. Investigation on spent ion-exchanger materials generated from nuclear facilities of CIAE aimed at its cementation to meet the acceptance criteria for disposal. The study results of their characterization of physical and chemical performance is described. The nuclides in the spent ion exchanger are measured by r-Spectrometry and Liquid Scintrillation spectrometry. The results of pH value are nearly 6.5-7.0 for the mixture of the spent cation and anion ion-exchanger. The water content of as-received resins has broadly deference depend on the samples. The spent ion-exchangers contain nuclides 60Co, 137Cs, 90Sr and other small fission product. The specific radioactivity is calculated. Specific radioactivity of the waste on a site reaches 108 Bq/kg and can be classified to medium level radioactive waste. According to results of investigation formulation of cementation carried out with success. (authors)
