Analysis of the absorption spectra of eleven quasars with Zsub(e)>2
Description
The high resolution spectra of 11 quasars investigated by Sargent et al. and Roberts et al. are reanalysed. 39 certain and probable absorption systems containing CO lines as well as atom and ion lines are found. For each CO-system line the probability of accidental coincidence is estimated. It is shown that these systems may arise due to absorption by interstellar gas of far galaxies (z>1) between an observer and a quasar. The gravitational effect of these galaxies on absorption quasar spectra is discussed. Increase of quasar visible angular dimensions is pointed out. The given effect leads to weak spectral-line breadth and existence of absorption systems with mixed degree of ionization
