Description
We analyzed the relationship between proton-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) findings and immunohistochemical findings of initial glioma. Study population includes 25 patients with initial glioma admitted in Tsukuba University Hospital between 1997 and 2005. There were 11 men, 14 women, their ages ranged from 15 to 82 years-old, mean 49.9. Histological diagnoses were 9 World Health Organization (WHO) grade 2, 7 grade 3 and 9 grade 4. Single voxel H-MRS was acquired using Gyroscan NT Intera (1.5T, Philips), proton regional imaging of metabolites and point resolved spectroscopy sequence. Repetition time was 2000 msec, Echo times were 68, 136, and 272 msec. The concentrations of choline (Cho), creatine (Cre) and N-acetylaspartate (NAA) were calculated using internal water as a standard. Tumor samples were obtained through open craniotomy surgery. MIB-1 index, p53 index and cell density were measured with immunohistological methods. Cell density did not correlate with malignancy. MIB-1 index and p53 index were higher in malignant glioma. The concentrations of Cho, Cre, or NAA did not correlate with these immunohistological findings. Cho was not related to cell density. These results may have been caused by tumor heterogeneity.
