A history of pitchblende
Description
The paper traces the history of pitchblende, from its discovery in 1516 in Bohemia, to modern day use of radioactive pitchblende derivatives. The history of the applications of uranium, radium and radon in medicine is outlined, as well as the uses of radium in industry and the home. The background establishing the harmful effects of radioactive materials on the body is discussed, as well as present day use of radium in medicine. (U.K.)
