Electron paramagnetic resonance evidence of H0 at three chemically inequivalent sites in gamma irradiated SrSO4:UO22+

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Radiochemistry Div.

Description

Electron paramagnetic resonance investigations of gamma irradiated SrSO4:UO22+ have revealed the presence of SO4-, SO3-, SH2- radicals and neutral hydrogen atoms. The presence of hydrogen based paramagnetic species is presumably due to radiolysis of HSO4- trapped in the matrix. Examination of EPR spectra of H0 center at low modulation amplitude have revealed the presence of a number of inequivalent sites for H0 center in the phosphor. The observation of these sites suggests that there is very slight non-s character on H0 center despite the fact that bonding between it and other centers is predominantly dipolar in nature.
