Remarks on ''general covariance'' and ''background independence''
Description
General covariance and/or background independence are usually considered to be central requirements for any unifying theory of fundamental interactions, including gravity and hence also a theory of space time. However, a precise definition of these terms seems elusive and it is unclear in precisely what sense the corresponding requirements really constitute non-trivial heuristic principles.
