Accelerator production of medical radioisotopes in North America

Creators

  • 1. Los Alamos National Lab., NM (USA)

Description

Both reactors and accelerators are required to meet the ever increasing need for a variety of radioisotopes for clinical practice and nuclear research. Many small cyclotrons in the private sector provide a number of clinical isotopes, such as 201TI and 123I, while the large accelerator facilities (Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP), and their Canadian counterpart, TRIUMF) provide a large number of research radionuclides as well as clinical isotopes (68Ge/68Ga, 127Xe, 82Sr/82Rb,...). The two US facilities serve as national resources for radionuclides that are not readily available from industry. Their production capabilities, uses of isotopes, and trends for the future are discussed
