Changes in the intrinsic fluorescence of lymphocytes after irradiation

  • 1. Research Institute of Preventive Medicine, Bratislava (Czechoslovakia)

Description

The changes in the intrinsic fluorescence of peripheral lymphocyte membranes after irradiation in vivo were investigated. The linear increase of fluorescence after irradiation with gamma field of 60Co and/or neutrons of 252Cf sources was found. The value of RBE of neutrons for this biological effect was found to be 3.7. The decrease of fluorescence polarization with increasing dose of both gamma and neutron irradiation was interpreted as due to structural changes of immediate vicinity of tryptophan molecules and thus conformational changes of lymphocyte membrane proteins.
