Tribological Degradations in Conformal Contacts due to Impact-Friction

Description

Because the wear laws do not account of evolving tribological conditions, they cannot predict the operating life of contacts between control rods and their guides in Pressurized Water Nuclear Reactors. This restriction is overcome by the study of the chain of tribological phenomena which control the third body flow and therefore the wear. The aim of this work is to predict this contact life. This problem cannot be studied 'in vivo', because of the radioactivity, implying the use of a simulator to attempt to reproduce the real contact geometry and conditions, to create specimens which serve as a reference. The lack of rheological data on the third body is overcome by a atlas relating morphology, cohesion and adherence of this third body. The atlas is established using calculations and tests on different rigs to study the parameters governing birth and life of the third body. The use of this atlas allows the reformation of the third body life, the contact behaviour, and the third body flow evaluation. One scenario of the contact behaviour is described and validated. It shows that the flow of wear particles depends on the third body reformation and its morphology is adapted to accommodate the velocity difference between guides and structures. The use of this atlas shows, through tests at different temperatures, that the variation of wear particle flow is due to the temperature influence on the operating conditions and not on the variations of the material properties. Abstract (French)

Faute d'integrer les evolutions des conditions tribologiques, les lois d'usure ne peuvent predire la duree de vie des contacts entre les guidages et les structures elancees des reacteurs nucleaires a eau pressurisee. Cette restriction est palliee par l'etude de l'enchainement des phenomenes tribologiques controlant les debits de troisieme corps, donc l'usure. Aussi le but de ce travail est de determiner la vie de ces contacts. Cette determination se heurte a la radioactivite qui exclut toute expertise de la realite, impliquant l'exploitation d'un simulateur qui, hors radioactivite, tente de reproduire les cinematiques de ces contacts afin de servir d'etat de reference. Par ailleurs, le manque de caracterisation rheologique des troisiemes corps solides est contourne par la creation d'un atlas qui lie morphologie, cohesion et adherence des troisiemes corps. Cet atlas est etabli a partir de calculs et d'essais realises sur differents simulateurs choisis, ou concus pour decoupler les parametres cinematiques gouvernant conception, naissance et vie propre du troisieme corps. L'utilisation de cet atlas permet alors de reconstruire la vie du troisieme corps, puis la cinematique du contact, et enfin d'evaluer les debits de troisieme corps, dont le debit d'usure. Un scenario de la vie du contact a ainsi ete ecrit et valide, il met en evidence que le debit d'usure depend de la reformation du troisieme corps et de l'adaptation de sa morphologie a l'accommodation de vitesses entre guidage et structure. De plus, l'exploitation de l'atlas montre que lors d'essais realises en fonction de la temperature, les variations du debit d'usure n'etaient pas uniquement dus aux effets de temperature sur les materiaux mais etaient aussi dus aux effets de temperature sur la cinematique du simulateur, donc sur celle du contact, et enfin sur le debit d'usure.
