A deep radioactive waste disposal project

Description

A basic overview is presented of activities aimed at designing and implementing a deep repository for spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive wastes. The following factors are addressed: the source term and the short-range interaction field, long-range interactions, examination of the surrounding rocks and site selection, implementation of research projects in an underground laboratory, safety analysis of the repository operation, quality assurance programme for each stage of the repository research, development, implementation, operation and shutdown of the repository, public acceptance, regulatory aspects, and international cooperation. A deep repository development schedule is proposed, the milestones are identified, and costs are estimated for the individual stages. (J.B.). 2 tabs., 13 figs
