Description
We have designed a 3 MWe lead cooled fast reactor operating on 20% enriched UO2 fuel. The core consists of 1729 fuel rods arranged in 19 fuel-assemblies with a total fuel mass of 2430 kg. Thanks to a very low power density, the core life-time reaches 27 full power years after an average burn-up of 4%. Forced convection of the lead coolant with eight pumps allows to maintain the maximum cladding temperature below 450oC. Applying surface alloying of fuel cladding tubes with alumina forming Fe-Cr-Al-RE is expected to provide integrity of the cladding over the entire life of the reactor. Thanks to the small core size, in combination with excellent safety properties of lead, a complete core melt at end of life yields a dose at the site boundary less than 1 mSv. Hence, our reactor concept is designed to meet requirements of Generation IV reactors and may be operated on a commercial basis in the Nunavut region of northern Canada, where current cost of electricity ranges from 0.5 - 1.2 CAD per kWh.
