Malignant tumours in the digestive tract of employees of the gas industry

An epidemiological study was carried out to investigate whether the influences of a person's working environment can lead to the development of malignant tumours in the digestive tract. The subjects of the study were employees of a large gas company, 4.928 men and 592 women. It appears that the workers at the furnace block were relatively more affected by tumors of the digestive tract than the other groups. The SMR as compared with the office workers and administrative personnel is 2.838, and compared with the other industrial employees is 1.333. The differences in both cases are statistically significant. Smoking habits have even less effects on the development of carcinomas of the digestive tract than on those of the respiratory tract. Apart from this, it is only the upper section of the digestive tract (the oral cavity, esophagus and stomach) which could be influenced by smoking. Psychological/nervous strain seems to accelerate the formation of such tumours, especially in the stomach region. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Anhand einer epidemiologischen Untersuchung wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob boesartige Tumoren des Verdauungstraktes ursaechliche Beziehungen zu Einfluessen vonseiten des Arbeitslebens aufweisen. Die Studie bezieht sich auf ein Grossunternehmen der Gasindustrie und erfasst insgesamt 4.928 Maenner und 592 Frauen. Es zeigt sich, dass Ofenblockarbeiter deutlich mehr als die uebrigen Kollektive von den fraglichen Tumoren betroffen sind. Die SMR betraegt gegenueber den Bueroarbeitern und Verwaltungsangestellten 2.838, gegenueber den uebrigen Probanden 1.333. Die Unterschiede sind jeweils statistisch signifikant. Rauchgewohnheiten haben nach den hierauf gerichteten Untersuchungen bei diesen Tumoren eine geringe Bedeutung als bei den Atemwegskarzinomen; sie kommen ausserdem nur bei Geschwuelsten der oberen Abschnitte des Verdauungstraktes (als solche wurden die Karzinome der Mundhoehle, der Speiseroehre sowie des Magens zusammengefasst) zur Geltung. Bei den in diesem Bereich aufgetretenen Tumoren, insbesondere bei denjenigen des Magens, scheinen zusaetzlich psychonervale Belastungen eine ursaechlich beguenstigende Wirkung zu haben.
