Auto radiolytic effects in 239Pu doped calcium chloro phosphate: an EPR and TSL study (Paper No. HF-01)

Description

Traplevel spectroscopic studies of 239Pu doped calcium chloropatite (Ca5(PO43Cl) were conducted using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and thermally stimulated luminescence(TSL) techniques. TSL glow peaks at 138, 176, 188 and 475K were observed (heating rate = 1K/sec) and their spectral characteristics have shown Pu3+ to act as the luminescent centre. Internal α-irradiation (from the α-decay of 237Pu) and external γ-irradiation studies carried out using EPR revealed the formation of radicals PO42-, O-, O3-, (ClO)2- and Ho under different conditions. The thermal destruction of PO42- and O3- are found to be responsible for the TSL glows observed at 176 and 475K respectively. (author). 1 tab
