Towards a basis in QCD for nuclear physics

Description
Attempts to describe nuclear physics, in particular, nucleon-nucleon interactions, in terms of quarks and gluons in perturbative QCD have not met with success. Nonperturbative QCD provides a basis for the boson-exchange model of the nucleon-nucleon force. Topological considerations bridge the picture of the strong interactions in terms of quarks and gluons and the picture in terms of meson exchanges. (author)
