Structural changes in the stomach mucosa in inhabitants of radioactively contaminated regions of Ukraine

  • 1. Ukrayins'ka Ekologyichna Akademyiya Nauk, Kiyiv (Ukraine)

Description

The biopsies of gastric mucosa from inhabitants of radioactively polluted Ukrainian villages were investigated to study morphological changes in human under the long-term influence of low doses of complex irradiation. All patients had the chronic inflammation in the stomach mucosa with the morphological signs of its long-lasting. That process was accompanied by an atrophy of mucosal functional structures, that weakened a defence of the mucosa. The signs of changes in the mucosal immune status as well as abnormalities in the epithelium regeneration were found in investigated biopsies. The presence of radionuclides in those biopsies confirms their participation in patho- and morphogenesis of chronic gastritis in the inhabitants of radioactively contaminated territories
