Adsorbed hydrogen detection on a surface by slow electron energy loss, physisorption, chemisorption

Description

The use of Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) for the detection of hydrogen adsorbed on a surface is discussed. The principle of EELS is reminded and the experimental set up described. An overwiew of experimental results obtained on various substrates is given. It is shown that this method is able to determine the chemical form of hydrogen (physisorbed, chemisorbed, etc...). Furthermore the role of the surface dipole moment on hydrogen physisorption is outlined

Abstract (French)

L'application de la spectrometrie de perte d'energie d'electrons lents a la detection de l'hydrogene adsorbe sur une surface est discutee. Apres le rappel du principe de cette technique et de sa mise en oeuvre experimentale, un tour d'horizon des resultats obtenus sur differents substrats est presente. On montre en particulier que cette methode, sensible a la liaison chimique, permet de distinguer l'hydrogene physisorbe de l'hydrogene chimisorbe sur une surface. Il apparait d'autre part que l'hydrogene peut se physisorber a la temperature ambiante, sous pression d'hydrogene, lorsqu'un moment dipolaire permanent existe sur la surface
