Search for neutrinos from GRB with IceCube in the cascade channel

Description

IceCube is the largest operating neutrino telescope covering a volume of 1 cubic kilometer. Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are among the prime candidates for the acceleration of cosmic rays. If this is the case, the fireball model predicts a neutrino flux from proton-photon interactions at a detectable level for IceCube. We present an analysis using the cascade detection channel of IceCube for the detection of GRB neutrinos, mainly sensitive to interactions of electron and tau neutrinos. This approach is complementary to other analyses focused on muon neutrinos, from the flavours considered as well as from the most sensitive hemisphere. While the muon analysis is constraint to the Northern sky to suppress background muons from cosmic rays, the cascade analysis considers GRBs from all directions. Due to neutrino absorption in the Earth for Northern bursts at high energies this analysis is mainly sensitive to GRBs in the Southern hemisphere. The analysis aims for a comparable all-flavour sensitivity to that obtained with the muon channel, in case the flux is distributed 1:1:1 on the different flavours and the emission for Northern and Southern hemisphere bursts is the same.
