MR imaging and P-31 localized spectroscopy of induced inflammation in the rabbit temporomandibular joint
Creators
Description
Early diagnosis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and joint deterioration from diverse insults is difficult. Treatment is determined empirically, invasively, or by means of long-term radiographic observation. The objective of this research was to evaluate alterations in the chemical composition of the inflamed TMJ by means of MR imaging and P-31 MR spectroscopy. New Zealand White rabbits (n = 10) were used. One TMJ served as a control with the contralateral one serving as an experimental joint. Inflammation was induced by injection of silica particles. MR imaging and MR spectroscopic data were collected longitudinally with a CSI 2-T/45 MR instrument. The rabbits were killed, the TMJs were blocked resected, and a histologic examination was performed. All data have been statistically analyzed
