Major safety issues of nuclear power plants
Description
The first nuclear power unit in Taiwan began commercial operation in November 1978. There are six nuclear units with a total capacity of 5,144 MWe in service. To the attention of AEC, numerous safety issues have loomed, over the past years, from various sources including construction and operation experiences, probabilistic risk assessment study, and public concerns. Major safety issues discussed herein include: 1) Reduction of Reactor Scrams, 2) Pipe Cracks in Boiling Water Reactors, 3) TDI Diesel Generator Reliability, 4) Pipe Whip Restraints Removal, 5) Flow Blockage of Circulating Water, 6) AE Design Review, 7) Evaluation of Emergency Operating Procedures, 8) Seismic Qualification of Non-safety Components, 9) Environmental Impact Assessment, and 10) Spent Fuel Storage.
