Development of fission chamber for nuclear reactors controlling

Description

Fission Chambers are gas-filled type detectors that operate in the ionization chamber regime, which is without electron multiplication. As the fill-gas is not directly ionized by neutrons, fission chambers are lined with fissile material that through interaction with neutrons fission products are produced, are highly ionizing particles. Pulse type operation of these detectors are used for neutron flux measurements during start up and shut-down reactor conditions in which pulses of high amplitude produced by fission products can be easily discriminated from those produced by alpha radiation from uranium and also from the external gamma field. With current or current fluctuation mode operation (Campbell) the use of these detectors can be extended for the whole range of reactor operation. In this work, it is presented the development and construction of a fission chamber at IPEN-CNEN/SP. Furthermore, the material and techniques used and also the operational characteristics obtained with the first prototype are given. (author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

As Camaras de Fissao sao detectores de ionizacao gasosa que funcionam em regime de camara de ionizacao, ou seja sem multiplicacao eletronica. Como o neutron nao ioniza diretamente o gas, a camara de fissao possue um deposito de material fissil que reage com os neutrons para gerar os fragmentos de fissao, que sao fortemente ionizantes. Estes detectores sao geralmente utilizados operando em pulsos para a medicao do fluxo de neutrons durante a partida ou parada do reator, devido a elevada amplitude dos pulsos gerados pelos fragmentos de fissao, facilmente discriminaveis dos pulsos gerados pela radiacao alfa do uranio e do campo gama externo. Operando em corrente ou flutuacoes de corrente (Campbell) a utilizacao pode ser extendida a toda faixa de operacao do reator. O presente trabalho mostra o desenvolvimento de camaras de fissao no IPEN-CNEN/SP, descrevendo as materias primas e tecnologias utilizadas, as caracteristicas funcionais e os testes realizado com o primeiro prototipo.
