Study of the analytical performances of an optical multi-fiber spectrophotometer for the simultaneous online analysis of uranium and plutonium

Description

The study consists in determining limits of use of an optical multi-fiber spectrophotometer. The latter analyses both uranium and plutonium simultaneously. The study is aimed at giving concentration values of actinides in solution with error intervals. Two causes of error were considered for solution analysis: - error in concentration calculation due to the treatment method called PLS; - error in measurement of intensity of light due to instrumentation. Error percentage in concentration due to PLS method was estimated for mono-elementary solutions of uranium at IV and VI oxidation degree with different concentrations. It was also estimated for mono-elementary solutions of plutonium at III and IV oxidation degree. Then, error percentage in concentration due to instrumentation was estimated from an approximation model. The latter was calculated for solutions such as those quoted before. Nevertheless, experimental estimation of this error percentage for mono-elementary solutions of uranium VI showed limits of approximation models created. Moreover, a second type of sensors used for solution analysis involves a wrong calculation of concentrations higher than a limit value. The limit value is about 30 g l-1 for solutions of uranium VI. A study showed that optical technology of this sensor was important because of the changing of the refractive index of solutions when their concentration increases. Highly concentrated solutions of uranium VI can eventually be analysed with a new type of sensor which was developed after the study. Performances of the new sensor are the same as performances of first sensors designed. Therefore, solutions of uranium VI with concentrations higher than 70 g l-1 cannot be analysed properly at present only because of PLS treatment model created. (author)

Abstract (French)

L'etude consiste a determiner les limites d'utilisation d'un spectrophotometre multifibres optiques dedie a l'analyse en ligne simultanee de l'uranium et du plutonium. L'objectif est d'indiquer les valeurs de concentration des actinides d'une solution avec les marges d'erreur. Deux sources d'erreur susceptibles d'intervenir lors de l'analyse des solutions ont ete prises en compte: - l'erreur de calcul des concentrations par la methode de traitement de type PLS; - l'erreur de mesure de l'intensite lumineuse liee a l'instrumentation. Le pourcentage d'erreur sur la concentration lie a la methode de calcul PLS a ete estime pour des solutions monoelementaires d'uranium au degre d'oxydation IV et VI et de plutonium au degre d'oxydation III et IV a differentes concentrations. Le pourcentage d'erreur sur la concentration lie a l'erreur de mesure de l'intensite lumineuse a ete obtenu a partir d'un modele d'approximation calcule sur des solutions monoelementaires d'uranium IV et VI et de plutonium III et IV a differentes concentrations. L'estimation experimentale de ce meme pourcentage d'erreur sur des solutions monoelementaires d'uranium VI a permis de montrer les limites des modeles d'approximation constitues. Nous avons mis en evidence, sur une deuxieme categorie de sonde developpee pour l'analyse des solutions, une valeur limite de concentration au-dela de laquelle le calcul des concentrations est errone. Cette valeur limite est de 30 g l-1 environ pour des solutions d'uranium VI. Une etude a montre l'importance de la technologie de l'optique liee a ce type de sonde en raison d'une modification de l'indice de refraction des solutions de plus en plus concentrees. La nouvelle sonde mise au point a l'issue de cette etude, permet maintenant d'analyser les solutions d'uranium VI fortement concentrees avec les memes performances que la premiere categorie de sonde developpee. Actuellement, l'analyse de solutions d'uranium VI de concentration superieure a 70 g l-1 environ n'est limitee que par le modele de traitement PLS constitue. (auteur)
