On the stability of the SU(2) separated two-monopole configuration

  • 1. Dublin Inst. for Advanced Studies (Ireland)

Description

The initial time-evolution of the static 2-monopole-solution of the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs system is studied when the Higgs potential is switched on. It is shown that for small separations the monopoles (in particular the zeros of the Higgs field) tend to move apart. This result implies that, in the presence of a Higgs potential, the monopole of strength two is in a state of unstable equilibrium. (orig.)
