Orimulsion

  • 1. Bitor America Corp., Boca Raton, FL (United States)

Description

This paper discusses orimulsion, a heavy bitumen (70%) in water (30%) emulsion, marketed in North America by BITOR AMERICA CORPORATION, has been successfully tested in Canada and is being tested in Florida as a new power plant fuel. Orimulsion underwent extensive bench, pilot and field testing before a commercial scale demonstration program was started in 1987 in Canada. The fuel has also been commercially evaluated in installations in Europe and Japan and more recently in a 400 MWe generating unit in Florida. Existing production capacity of 50,000 barrels per day (2.9 million metric tons per year) will be doubled by 1992. The price of Orimulsion is indexed to the cost of delivered coal fuel. This is one of its many economic advantages. Also, the supply contracts are intended to have a duration of about 15 to 20 years
