Using INPRO Methodology for a Holistic Sustainability Assessment in Safety, Safeguards and Security (3S)

  • 1. IAEA - INPRO, Vienna (Austria)

Description

The International Project for Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycle Facilities (INPRO) has a methodology for assessing the sustainability of innovative and evolutionary nuclear energy systems (NES) in the areas of infrastructure, economics, environmental impact of stressors and depletion of resources, safety for nuclear reactors and fuel cycle facilities, waste management, and proliferation resistance. The INPRO methodology uses a hierarchical approach to assess sustainability, based on fundamental basic principles (BP), which defines the goal or target for each area that the NES needs to achieve to be sustainable.
