Description

Separation Science plays a pivotal role in the nuclear fuel cycle. Industrial scale separations are needed during the processing of uranium/thorium/zirconium ores and purification of uranium nitrate/thorium nitrate/zirconium nitrate to obtain nuclear grade materials, heavy water production and fuel reprocessing. Remediation of radionuclides from moderator/PHT streams in power reactors and from waste streams emanating from various nuclear fuel cycle facilities are other examples of applications of separation science in the Nuclear Industry. On the other hand, analytical separations are required during mineral exploration, chemical quality control of fabricated fuels, burn up measurements and nuclear material accounting. In addition, control laboratories of all industrial separation processes carry out extensive analytical separations. The conference has made an attempt cover a wide range of topics including modeling, solid phase extraction, membrane based separations, pyrochemical reprocessing. Some sessions are devoted to nuclear applications, membrane separations, and chromatographic separations. Inclusion of biochemical separations is special feature of the conference.
