Breast-conserving therapy and local recurrence in the conserved breast

  • 1. Gunma Univ., Maebashi (Japan). School of Medicine

Description

One hundred and fifty-one patients with Stage I or II breast cancer were treated by breast-conserving therapy between August 1991 and December 1996. Local recurrence in the conserved breast occurred in five patients. Risk factors of local recurrence were surgical margin and estrogen receptor status. There was no significant difference in actuarial survival rate between patients with and without local recurrence. Eighteen patients with ductal carcinoma in situ who underwent complete resection of carcinoma were also investigated, and incidence of ipsilateral breast tumors were 31.1%. All patients with ipsilateral breast tumors were salvaged with partial mastectomy or subcutaneous mastectomy. (author)
