German waste management policy: the back-end of the fuel cycle situation in the Federal Republic of Germany

In September 1979 the heads of government decided to replace the integrated waste management center by the integrated waste management concept. This means a closed system of intermediate storage of spent fuel, reprocessing of spent fuel or conditioning and final disposal of all wastes. The decision confirms that this concept is feasible from a safety poitn of view, and it guarantees the necessary safe management of the nuclear fuel cycle. With the September 1979 decision a clear policy for the management of nuclear wastes was formulated with a fixed time frame. In the Federal Republic of Germany all purequisites in purequisites in political, legal, administrative, organizational and technical terms are fulfilled for implementing these policies successfully
